Certain boat marques are so rare they deserve the ultimate touch. Hackercrafts, Gar Woods, Dodges and the like deserve to be preserved rather than restored. Preservation involves documenting a boat’s provenance and saving as much of the historic construction as possible from framing to planking to mechanical systems. Of course, safety and reliability are taken into consideration with all Nelson preservations.

Preservation is not a viable approach for many old boats. Some boats have been left to the elements for decades decaying most of the wood. Others have been pilfered of their original power. And most wooden boats suffer from rotten and oil soaked hull bottoms. Restorations typically feature a more liberal approach to wood replacement.
